3.0 de 5 estrellas A little outmoded for 2018?
Bought this to to make it easier to put things away and stay organized in that black hole we call the garage. My daughter got excited and dove right in to use it. She loved the fact that there were frames and cool pictures you could use. When I learned how to use it, I was really disappointed by the variety of pictures available. Nothing for goggles, gloves, flashlights/light bulbs (other than a little light bulb symbol). It seemed a little outmoded. And there are 99 frame options, and scrolling through them is cumbersome since there are no categories. The manual has a legend, and you can type in a number to get to the picture, but it is so tiny to see in the book!!

Switching between tape sizes seemed to confuse the machine at times. It claimed an 18 point font was too big for .47" tape, which I know is not because I'd already done it.

I got curious about the PC connection and went through some very un-slick steps to download the software and printer driver. The application is not intuitive to use and did not open up a whole new world of icons or frames as I had hoped. You get more from emojis on a cell phone. I don't see why it would not be possible to use Internet symbols/characters. I will see if I can make that happen. I was really hoping for a clean, consistent look for all of my labels, along with relevant pictures, but am having a hard time accomplishing that.

I do like that you can use different font sizes per line. Nice for disclaimers like standard vs. small base for light bulbs.

Of course the best feature is the ability to plug it in vs. using a ton of batteries. Although my mom told me to just keep the batteries in the box with the device, my family always seems to pilfer and you can never find enough batteries to do anything. I did see a cheaper one at the Container Store that had a case with a battery section that was well rated, but it doesn't have center alignment like this one does. That was important to me so that all of my labels could be the same length (which was occasionally problematic and I wasted quite a few labels on the learning curve).

And the big mystery question: why is it required to have a 1/2" feed cut off before every single label is printed?? I set to narrow margins (I was not confident with chain printing with 3" centered labels) to reduce the waste as much as possible, but I am at a loss about the need for that strange feature. I know all label makers have this waste problem. It just seems so unnecessary.

1.0 de 5 estrellas Excellent hardware but software is very functional but completely unusable with no documentation
Revised again! labeler itself is fine but the pc software is beyond incredibly bad to point of being unusable. It's also impossible to save and recall a previous label without losing your mind. There is no documentation for the pc software. I doubt anyone at brother every tried to use or test the pc software. I'm making this judgement as someone who has written code for at least 50 years in all possible languages and has an MS in Computer Science. Do not buy this product if you really want to use the pc connection and software. Dymo is much better but the labeler is very inferior so you can't win/

Revised from below: Incredible software but buggy. Maybe overly ambitious. Not sure was tested very much with the major issues having to do with the data base and saving labels. Have tested on several computers with the same problems.
Usable mostly but like I said, amazingly functionality especially compared with Dymo's software. Might be a win 10 issue. Desperately needs an update for fixes = PLEASE. Unit wastes about 3/4" per label which is not unusable. However, the waste pieces are cut off for you and ejected like "shell casings". This means you don't have to trim the labels like with Dymo. Lastly, be sure to remove the plastic film from display since it's hard to see and causes "rainbows".
----------------------------------------------- Original review - still holds ------------------------------
To qualify my comments, I own several Dymo, Brother, and Panasonic labelers, some much more expensive (all good products from good companies), but this Brother is a real winner. Even though I have only had the unit for a relatively short period of time, I felt compelled to point out a couple of issues to prospective buyer. These issue don not detract from the excellent functionality, value, and quality of the unit. Just some things you need to know going in. First, the power adapter uses a negative center pin (as does DYMO!). There is absolutely no good reason for this except to force buyers to buy their power adapter if they lose the one it comes with and it is dangerous since because it uses a common size jack and voltages, customers might be tempted or accidentally plug in an power adapter from another product (like an external hard drive). Plugging in an adapter with the normal center positive pin could easily burn the unit out (unless it has reverse polarity protection, which I wouldn't test). I would suggest labeling their adapter as having a negative center pin. You can easily use a normal 12v 2Amp power adapter by using a reverse polarity adapter which Amazon sells for a few dollars. The other issue is that the color display screen is protected by two, one, plastic film layers. This is good except everyone else uses one and they don't mention this. I removed the first layer, turned the unit on, and thought that the unit was defective since the screen was dim and had lines going through it. By accident, I noticed a second plastic film covering the display which caused the problem (usually the film does not affect displays and protects against scratches). The third issue is that to insert the tape cartridge, you open a rear lid to expose the tape cartridge bay. It is not obvious how you open the rear lid, nor is anything mentioned about this in the manual or online. The answer is that you open the rear lid by firmly pulling up on an indented side tab. You have to pull firmly and then you will hear a loud crack like you snapped off some plastic latch. However, there is no release button and you just pull up, hear the crack, and then it pivots to the rear. To be fair, these are minor and this is an excellent unit, as mentioned, much better than the Dymo, certainly at this price point. It is well made and has an amazing variety of functions (including vertical or sideways print for labeling cables using 1" tape - equivalently priced Dymo units can do neither!). In fact, the main challenge is forcing yourself to spend the time to learn the various functions (although you don't have to if all you want to do is print simple labels since it starts up in "simple print label" mode). You can run the unit on batteries if you want (6 AA batteries, not some expensive rechargeable battery). The reason it needs 6 AA's is that it takes a lot of power to index the tape cartridge and cut the tape. The batteries are also needed if you want to retain any templates or settings you have made. The unit can be used quite effectively without connecting it to a computer but I would recommend such since the software (which has to be downloaded from Brother) is fabulous. One last thing is that some have mentioned that the unit wastes tape due to a large leader and trailer. THIS IS TRUE OF THE DYMO UNITS ALSO! The reason is mostly due to the cartridge designs, not necessarily their desire to sell tape. You can buy compatible tape on Amazon for much lower prices. This is the labeler to buy unless you want a small, light weight unit. While portable, it is oriented towards desktop use. (note, I have no connection to Brother and paid full price)

I have owned 6 Brother label printers and with time they became better, more features and easier to use until the one is now being reviewed. The last printer I had to discard, the "on" button was malfunction and it was not worth taking the printer to be repaired: would cost more than a new one.
So I ordered what I thought was the "top of the line" Brother printer: this PT-D600 is a nightmare to use, a nightmare to read through the instructions, a nightmare to get through to Brother customer service for support: 80 minutes on hold until a technician took the call, 25 minutes on line to get web support (useless). Finally with the technician, even though one is asked for the product number to be directed to a "specialist", this poor technician was learning "in the job": had no clue how the machine worked.
When we finally figured out some of the features of the machine, many of the features part of my older machine were not available such as:
when the machine is switched off, all of the settings go into default mode, therefore one has to set again the font, the style, the size . at every use.
"Caps" also has to be set at each use because default mode is small caps.
I wish I could return this machine, I wasted half a day trying to familiarize myself with it but no luck. I am tempted to discard it, it is so user unfriendly.

1.0 de 5 estrellas Moiré patterns on display make it unusable
This is the second PD600 I've tried. I returned the first one immediately and I'll return the second one. Both have colored banding on the display that moves as you move your viewing angle. The image shows an example -- but when viewed with the naked eye the colored banding (known technically as moiré patterns) is vertical. The iPhone see those as diagonal bands.

Either way, the ever-shifting colored bands are nausea inducing. Either I have a two bad units (which I doubt) or Brother has a serious technical problem with the colored displays.

I've been a loyal Brother P-Touch fan since the first units were introduced, so I'm sad to see what appears to be a mistake like this.

1.0 de 5 estrellas I Will Never Buy Another Brother Product
I purchased this labelmaker about 19 months ago. After figuring out how to use it, I put the unit in a padded case and onto a shelf where it sat until today (April 19, 2022. I took the unit out to print labels and it had a distorted display and the keypad was dead except for the power button. After changing the batteries and experiencing no change, I called Brother customer service and after a 30 minute wait was able to speak to someone. After jumping through hoops for another 20 minutes, I was told that the problem was physical damage and was not covered by the warranty. Since that could not have possibly been the case, I have decided to share my extremely negative experience.

3.0 de 5 estrellas Not bad.
It did what I wanted it to do, but it required me installing the drivers/software on my computer.

It appears that only the most basic label making tasks can be performed using the build in interface.

All the people saying the screen sucks it looks like rainbows don't realize there is a second removable film on the display causing the interference pattern. That being said, its still a cheap display, but it doesn't look nearly as awful as some of the review photos.

Lastly, if you go too small on the text using the computer software, the results begin to look a lot like dot matrix font (the individual "pixels" are larger than the detailed features).

I used some generic P-Touch compatible white on clear laminated tape for a project on my car, and I am happy with the results.

1.0 de 5 estrellas Cant hold 99 labels... or 30. Useless Label Software With a Max of 9 Saves.
This printer does everything I need, Todays date and a future date depending on the expiration of the item that auto generates based on the days current date. The label software is great for this, took me 2 minutes to get 9 labels ready, but there is no way of getting the transferred labels into the file system that holds 99:

"Unfortunately, you cannot edit/change the downloaded/transferred template that stored/saved in the machine. This model does not support this option. The current model that supports this option is PTE500-PTE550W. (-help.brother-usa.com)

So I have a max of 9 transferable labels in the machine under a special folder. Now have to spend my time doing the labels on the PT-D600 itself, which takes a considerable amount of time, button pushing, and less formatting options. This machine will do the job I need, but I was shown a golden carrot and ate compost instead. If this had a functional editing software that could save in the actual 99 slots instead of just 9 this would have been a hands down 10/10.

Update: The memory will only hold 25 labels when you add todays date and a future date. This Labeler has become useless for my project that only needed 35 premade labels.

3.0 de 5 estrellas A great label printer designed to waste label material.
A great product but not a great company behind it. This label printer is easy to set up and use. I downloaded their free software and used it with a Windows 10 computer. The software is easy to use. The labels it produces are high quality.

Finding their software and the drivers for the PTD600 on their website is a total pain. They make it all but impossible to find the right software for the device. And as everyone else has noted, the printer is set up out of the box to make sure users waste as much expensive label tape as possible so they can sell the consumables.

OK, I get it, this is the razor blade business model. Sell the printer at a low price and make the profit off the consumables. But Brother is really brazen about it. They deliver the printer with default setups designed to waste label material.

They do provide settings that will eliminate waste but you are required to dig around and experiment to stop the horrible default setup. That nullifies the simple and easy to use machine and software. I just want some quick high quality labels. I don't want to become an expert on a label maker. It's not information I want crammed into my brain or time I want to waste learning.

But if you don't mind wasting money on label cartridges, this thing is fast and easy to use and it produces a wide range of high quality labels that stick well and hold up to modest amounts of water and other stuff they may encounter around the home.

1.0 de 5 estrellas Limited software for Macs
This is the perfect label printer if you are a Windows user, not so much for Mac users. I gave a low rating because the listing makes it seem like there's no difference.

There are 2 software packages. One is to create labels, and print them when printer is attached via USB. The other is to transfer label files between computer and printer. The second one is only available for Windows.

What does this mean? It means that Mac users can't move Mac-saved files to the printer and can't move printer-saved files to the Mac. Essentially, whichever environment the labels were created in are locked in that location. Not to mention, the templates on the printer do not allow changing the cutting prefs, so if you use them, you will be losing a lot of 1 inch blanks (as complained about elsewhere).

As someone who mostly uses the printer by itself, only connecting the Mac so that I could create a label that I'll need going forward, this has less than half functionality.
