This has been a great product so far. I got it today set it up in about 20 minutes and dictated my first essay in about half the time it normally takes to type it. I did struggle with the use of the program a little but this was mostly me not understanding how to use it complelty. I still need to read the instructions, I guess that is a good statement in how easy it is to use.

I was a little worried about how well the software would understand me. I use to have a very early version of this software and it was nearly impossible to get it to recognize my speech enough to make it worth using, even after training. This time it worked right out of the box. Although when I have time I may try using the training part of the software just to be on the safe side.

THIS DOES INCLUDE A HEADSET. Amazon offers the program and a seperate headset but it is not needed. You may want to upgrade your headset though. Try the one that is included first. It did not fit me well so I will be upgrading but you may not need to.

As an adult college student, the typing req'd for classes can get tedious and even cause hand fatigue. Dragon helps a lot. It's not perfect. You still have to double-check and correct some things it doesn't get on the first go. And it's critical you be willing to invest the up front time to train it to your voice and speaking style. The more you use it, the better it gets in terms of accuracy. Highly recommend you allow it to scan your written materials on the PC, too. Mine picked up all kinds of technical and scientific jargon I need to use, but that wouldn't ordinarily be part of its lexicon. I was astonished at how often it got those terms correct, even some of the acronyms, after the scan and training. It can be a memory hog on the computer, so it's important you have a newer system with a good amount of Ram installed. I've used it on my Toshiba netbook, which has 2 Gb and it does okay as long as I don't have but one other program open. My desktop PC has 6GB and is a real workhorse. It can handle the Dragon and 2-3 programs running simultaneously, which is often necessary for some of my school projects. It works well with MS Office. I use it with Onenote for consolidating my class notes or for dictating notes while I'm reading assigned textbook materials and it's terrific. Saves me having to stop all the time to grab my pen and notepad. It's the best voice recognition software on the market and was well worth the investment for me.

Student Verification Required - Totally frustrated now

I am very disappointed that it was not made more clear to me that the purchase of this product would lead me down a rabbit trail of Student Verification.

Although it says this is a Preferred Student version - I was unaware what this meant. Basically, before I can use this product, I have to prove to a 3rd party (not Nuance) that I am a student. Well, I am not, but fortunately I do have several kids who are in college now. So maybe I will be able to use it.

But - I should have never bought this had it been made clear what was required. This is why Nuance is getting the brunt of this disgust..

Just try to get past the installation!

This product has the most ridiculous installation process! My kid needs this product for school and we have been trying to get things installed and registered for the past four days. The verification process to proove he is a student wasn't as complex as I thought, but when the serial # was just the beginning of the another registation process that took us through three different websites and made me want to through my sons laptop out a window. I think buying the regular version might be worth it if the process of getting your activiation key is simpler and takes less time.
Once you finally get your million number activation key and have registered your product, you can start the long process of training the program to know your voice. I just hope it is helpful in the months ahead because the start up process is just one big agrivation after another.

I work in the IT department of a small university. I had tried the Standard version of Dragon NaturallySpeaking over the Christmas holidays and was impressed by how accurate the program was when I was dictating into MS Word. But, I also wanted to be able to dictate into a portable device and then have DNS transcribe from the uploaded mpeg or wave file.

I haven't had alot of time to work with this and it wasn't as accurate as when I was dictating from a microphone, but that is probably because you would have to train DNS to understand you via the specific recorder you are using. I don't know how you would do that for an imported audio, but via a mike, you can read selected text to train DNS.

Still, was very happy with the transcription accuracy and speed into Word. I'm a relatively fast typist, so depending upon the format and wording of the original document, it may be quicker to just type the document. e.g. If you have a bunch of parentheses, quotes, special characters, or words that sound similar to commands.

*Oh, neither Standard or Preferred versions do very well, or at all, with voice commands for MS Outlook.
