Paid a little bit more over the cheap moulded plastic cables and these really shine. Full metal housing with removable shells (for shortening or repairs), nice snug connectors, rubber strain relief boots, and a nice supple, flexible cables. Well worth the bit extra.
It's fair to say Hosa makes two types of cables for both audio and midi. The really, really cheap, thin, flimsy colored cables, or the Pro cables. Spend the extra few dollars and go the Pro route. It's still cheaper than the competition and you are getting a very comparable cable. The Hosa Premium midi cables have very thick, solid midi connectors that fit nicely into you midi ports and the cable will not easily come out inadvertantly. The rubber-like shielding around the cable itself makes it feel well protected and it won't kink. I use them in the studio but they would work well on stage. I believe the same to be true for their Pro audio cables.
I'm not usually a fan of Hosa products, but this cable exceeded my expectations that I had for it. I expected it to be rather flimsy and weak, with a questionable quality on the connector itself. Since it was advertised as "serviceable", I figured that the quality would either be decent, and easy to correct should something happen, or that it'd be rather cheap and relatively easy to correct either way, and with the modest price it seemed like a good idea to go ahead and purchase it.
When it arrived, one pin on both ends were slightly askew enough that I couldn't just plug them into a 5-Pin MIDI-In port (Hosa Quality Control has always been hit or miss which is a reason I'm not too fond of the company), so I had to bend those back into place gently, but other than that, there were no issues with it. I was really impressed with the connector itself, and how well secure the boot was. For the price, the quality of the cable is actually very good and worth considering, if you're in the market for a MIDI cable with a cheap price that won't be a disappointment.
