Yes, it does appear to be well made and I respect iFi as a company. Yes, I can hear a slight improvement in sound quality on both a completely digital iFi Zen Stream as well as a Pro-Ject Pre Box S2 Digital (2 different iFi's as they're different voltages). Is the benefit worth the asking price? Probably. But...
I then tried a Linear PSU and holy [stuff]. On both devices, I'll just say that I will never use a switching power supply on an audiophile grade device again. The iFi PSU went back, something I don't like to do, and I ordered a second Linear PSU as the Zen Stream and Pre Box are in 2 different systems in 2 different locations.
To sum up, if there didn't exist a linear PSU for $119, then yes, this is worth it. But one does, so no.
I like iFi products and my most recent addition was the iDSD Signature headphone DAC/amp. It’s great but it does not come with a power cord or charger. It only comes with a short USB A to USB C cable intended to be used for whatever charger the customer already has. While I probably could charge the iDSD Signature with other devices I have at home I decided to complete the package and get the 5V charger. One of the things that sold me on this particular wall wart, besides the “clean power” claim (make of that what you will) was the fact that it is delivered with four electric socket plug standards which covers most countries in the world. I bought the iDSD because I travel internationally for both business and pleasure and while travel socket adapters work just fine, there’s just something about being able to chose the correct socket plug for the country I’m going to be in. And of course since you get these four plugs it doesn’t matter to the wall wart if you are in a 110V or 220V country. I gave the product five starts for sound quality as a total score for the product, not literally for sound quality. I do not put too much credence into “clean power” but I’m certain it doesn’t hurt. I suspect that this “clean power” thing is iFi’s justification for the price. And that brings us to value for money. Quality - great. Adapters for many countries and accepting any voltage coming out of the wall - great. Overpriced - yes. Three stars.
I plugged iPower 2 into my iFi ZenDac 2 and it made a HUGE difference in sound quality. I know, I know it is a third of the cost of the Dac itself, but when drawing power from only the USB cable, I was hearing a ton of static and crackling. I plugged in this little bundle of joy into my Dac and POOF! Total silence! Pure clean sound, the way it should be! ZenDac, Tidal and iFi iPower2 is musical bliss!
The way that the plug is orientated, it extends 3 inches to the left and blocks me from additional outlets on my line conditioner. Even using the very last outlet, it covers the Lan and telephone surge protection outlets on my Panamax. I purchased this to power my USB iDefender, but I could not hear enough of a discernable difference to warrant taking up more than one space on my line conditioner.. I have returned it, but if it did not take up so much space, I would have kept it.
I just plugged this into my iFi Audio Zen Phono Preamp and the difference is immediate. Huge improvement in depth of sound. The cheap 5V power supply that came with the preamp makes it sound tinny by comparison. Makes you wonder why iFi Audio even sells components with such cheap power supplies. I guess they're taking advantage of power supply upgrade market. Smart. Trust me, it's totally worth the price of the upgraded power supply.
I was having a noise issue with my turn table and I use the iFi Zen Phono as the preamp. I purchased this hoping it would solve the noise issue, it did not. It appears to be mostly a high(er) current power adapter with a ferrite choke on the end. If it was simply advertised as a high current power adapter then I would have given 5 stars because that's what it is. It may also be low noise but it isn't going to save you from a significant noise problem.
Over time my MagicJack line would consistently develop noise, cured by installing a new power supply. Instead of using the cheap 5v "chargers", I decided to try this device which supplies clean, noise-free power. Only time will tell. It is a bit expensive, so therefore 4/5 value for money stars.
