This is a wonderful device. The mics sound great, the 'verb is great, the ergonomics are ok, battery life is very good, and the size is perfect. I've made many recordings of my Cordoba GK and the ability to play back on Bluetooth devices is really something that makes the R07 stand out.

I also own or have owned several Zoom and Tascam mini-recording devices (H1, H2, H4, etc.). They are all pretty good but the R07 is a step up with features and form-factor.

I use it for recording my own music from guitar, mandolin and violin. It works extremely well! The tracks are copied and stored on a micro SD card. Fastest way to move the files around is simply to remove the SD card and place it in your computer. Another reviewer said the using the port was slow. Could be, but not sure. Bluetooth works fine for speakers, although separated independent stereo speakers don't necessarily pick up sound for both stereo tracks in two separate speakers. Best to use the 3.5 jack with a split cable or hub. Stereo speakers with both tracks connected through one jack work fine in bluetooth or Auxiliary mode. Of course if you just want to playback with any device, you can easily save the files for use absolutely anywhere on any device that plays mp3 or WAV files.

Bluetooth connection to the remote app is quirky, doesn't work and then does work. Once working its a permanent link to the device. The on-board speaker is really not for listening, just monitoring to see if something is there. At times, as another review said, the sound out of it is muted. Then suddenly its okay again. I think its a feature to prevent distortion or feedback, but not sure what triggers the mute, and what releases it. If you need an immediate loud clear playback, bring a small speaker, or figure out how to get the volume set to normal. A much better instruction manual would be nice! If you are not familiar with recording, it could be confusing.

Once past those idiosyncrasies, the thing is a brilliant recording device that can capture the full range of a fine instrument, using the "Instrument" setting. Convenient and quick! Very complete and well balanced from deep bass notes to impossibly high pitches. Amazing really!

Great Handheld Compact Recorder

I love this recorder! I use an Zoom H6 recorder for my podcast, which is an excellent high quality recorder. However, I needed something smaller, so I read about the Roland R-07 and it sounded like something that would work for me. Some people are intimidated by the larger recorders, or even a handheld microphone. So I purchased the Roland R-07 and now, because of its portsbility, versatility, and excellent sound quality, it is now with me wherever I go. Slips easily into any pocket, smaller than an iPhone, about the same size as a small flip phone, I’m telling you, it’s now my number one go to unless I have guests sitting around the table and I have microphones in front of them.
I also took a chance and purchased this unit ‘used’ from Amazon Warehouse, which was a fantastic deal. The unit arrived on time and was repackaged, minus the booklet, but other than that this recorder was brand spanking new and I would most certainly purchase from Amazon Warehouse as used again in the future.

If you listen to Episode 3 Season 2, Solari...Oh Oh, you can hear the Rolands recordings. All of the train sounds, the clicking of the Solari board, me interviewing the people, all of that was recorded on the Roland R-07. The other dialog of me narrating is the Zoom H6.
The Roland is exactly what I’ve been searching for and will be making the trip overseas for recordings in England, Ireland, Scotland. If you want a high quality, portable recorder that fits in your pocket? You don’t be disappointed with the Roland R-07

PS: in the above photos you will see the size verses an iPhone 6S.

Also, you will see where I placed small pieces of electrical tape over the recording lights so when I interview people on the street they don’t get overwhelmed by the recording process.

Good quiet recorder at this price

I bought this to compare to my Zoom H1. I bought this because I had heard good things and I needed a recorder with quiet preamps for nature recording. It is a great little pocket sized unit for that purpose. I have used it with the inboard mics and with external PNP microphones (EM 172 and EM 184 capsules).

My one negative is the very streamlined shape makes keeping a wind muff on the unit difficult. My wind muff covers up a bit of the top of the screen and is easily pulled off putting it in/out of your pocket. Only a minor issue though. Handling noise is something to be aware of, although it is nothing like the terrible handling noise problems of the plastic Zoom units.

When this is one sale for $100 it is a best buy. At full retail price of $200 it is still a great little recorder and probably the best in that price point. Once you get over $250, there are others to consider.

Takes great audio recordings, and is quick to set up and start using right out of the box. There are a lot of settings to dial in to get it exactly how you want it, but the scene options give you a great starting point. Battery life is decent, but always wish it could be better. Uses 2 AA batteries.

Like others have mentioned, the SD card is a little tricky to get in and out, but you can connect to computer via USB, so that's not a huge issue. The bluetooth app is nice for using your phone instead of the device, though it feels like they could have included some better file management features on the app, such as being able to view and rename files on the fly.

Overall super happy with it. Already created some music with audio I recorded, and it's thumping.

great unit? cant get the bluetooth or remote app on iphone to function at all. that seems kinda a gimick. but the on-board functionality is great. mics pic up a LOT of floor noise, but if u connect a real mic, performance increases exponentially as far as usable, quiet audio.

I wanted a better than average voice recorder. WOW was I surprised about all the features and considering storing some music on a different SD card. Haven't done that yet but as far as the voice recording it works excellent. I choose this one because of the Roland name and prior experiences with their products. Also purchased the case for it and that was a perfect fit.

I’ve used a Roland R-09 portable recorder to record my podcast since 2007. After 13 years of use I decided to upgrade to a new recorder and purchased the Roland R-07. It has much better battery life and higher sound quality settings. I am extremely pleased with this new recorder.

Real life is in stereo. If you want to record your voice, your music or the world. Roland can do it. The only problem is you can't use it with iOS 14 in your IPad or Iphone. Last Firmware was in 2019 o 2018! Roland WAKE UP! and do give us a 2021 Firmware for 2021.
