Not what I expected

I like Shure products, in general, but these IEMs were not what I was expecting. I wanted them for my band's live on-stage monitoring system. I have a fair bit of experience with sound so based on all of the reviews I was really hoping for a great audio rendition of our mix.

Unfortunately, these IEMs did not live up to the hype. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

The sound is tinny and hollow. I compared various other cheaper headphones that I own playing MP3 files through iphone, ipad, Macbook, etc.

Put it this way - my bluetooth ipods sound significantly better... so that's not a bar I want to aspire to for a $1,000 set of Shure 846 IEMs.

I did try a couple of different nozzle attachments to see if the ear fit was the key issue... and to some degree that was part of the problem. My right ear needs a slightly different "fit" than my left to hold the seal. And when I hold the IEMs snuggly, pressing gently inward, I can certainly hear more low end and the sound, overall, is better and fuller.

However, again, in comparing my $149 airpods, which fit relatively loosely, the Shure 846 was still lacking considerably. And I shouldn't have to hold/press inwards to get the audio experience.

I've read that if you listen to really hi-fi enhanced audio file formats you get a tremendous experience. But who is going to set up their entire library to accommodate that?

Plus, my band tried everything to adjust my on-the-floor sound and nothing worked well. Albeit a few adjustments worked better than others... but for $1,000... I really expect to be blown away.

These IEMs are no better than a traditional $100 pair of headphones. Unless I'm doing something drastically wrong?

I truly hope others have a better experience.

I had a pair of SE-535's for many years and losing them was a sad note on an otherwise wonderful trip. They were the best earphones I ever had, and I could not bring myself to replace them at the time. Happily, circumstances changed, and I finally broke down and got a pair of the 846's.

First, noise isolation: I ride a motorcycle. These are almost TOO isolating, and I may need to find some tips that allow some sound in. But being able to hear the opening notes of "Skateaway" at 50mph? Incredible.

Sound quality: The richness of the sound, and the seemingly bottomless deep notes, blending with the faithful reproduction of voice, strings - everything I could throw at them - the experience of the sound in a public setting almost feels a little "naughty" - like everyone else is just sitting in traffic, and I'm at the mixing console of a recording studio, picking up sounds like a singer taking a breath before breaking into a chorus. That's the "violation of physics" - my body is in a noisy intersection, but my eardrums are in an intimate studio hearing musicians. All from a couple things smaller than my fingertips. How??

Fit: Several people mentioned that the standard (braided cord with 3.5mm jack) cords are hard to get "seated" around the ear. I tried them briefly and can't disagree. The bluetooth adapter has more flexible cords and I found I could make them sit so perfectly around my ear that I forgot I was wearing them.

There's no avoiding the elephant in the room: The price. Outside of exotic gear designed for A-list performers on stage, these are about the most expensive IEM's around. If you can afford them, just buy them. Yes, they are worth it. If it's a stretch, see if there are any repacks or "used/like new" available.

I am a melomaniac and this is the best present for such an individual. So, I gave it to me. These earphones are dramatic: you can hear clearly and distinctively every instrument in an orchestra or band while preserving the content of the totality of the recording. Great and sophisticated piece of equipment. I doubt there is anything better than this. I am a happy customer. A delight.

Probably my first Amazon review. I have to speak out on these after having had them on only 2 hours tonight.

I am new to good quality headphones.

After trying the wireless junk out there, just 2 years ago I purchased the Audio-technica M50x and then the Audio technica MSR7 and then I finally went IEM with the audio technica ATH-CKR100iS.

After realizing IEM's is the way to go I went up market to the $400 Audio-technica E70. The E70 was better than anything I had heard before. I used the E70 with the Earstudio ES100 MK2.

I was aware of the SE846 and thought no way I would spend that much no matter how good the reviews were. A funny thing though, I could not get them out of my head and I kept wondering, "what if".

Well I finally took a bite and it came today.

I went straight for the BT2 wireless module to see if I would still be needing a DAC like the ES100.

No. I do not need a DAC. These headphones are incredible.
These headphones with the BT2 module far exceed the E70's with the ES100.

Is it worth paying $500 extra over what I had?

My previous was $400 (E70) plus $100 (ES100). ($500)

My current is SE846 with BT2 ($1000).

I hear more.
It sounds much better.
I hear stuff I did not hear before.

That makes it worth it to me.

UPDATE on 2021-01-21
As it turns out I will be using the Qudelix 5K versus the BT2 module. The BT2 module is too limited it just pairs and plays.

I use these daily commuting to and from work on the subway. Even with the loud train noise, the sound is clear and audible even at low volume levels. Expensive, yes, but still worth the price if you can afford them.

I love love love my Bronze SE846 earphones! I’ve been an exclusive user of Shure earphones for years. The sound sound quality of these is just stunning. The bass! The bass! The bass! Clean and bright sound with all I listen to. I get lost in my tunes when wearing these earphones. I pair these SE846s with my EarStudio ES100 Mark II DAC. There can’t be anything better!

They are pricey! but they are also great quality. I'm not an audiophile so I'm not one to give sound advice but I am more than satisfied with the full range of sounds, low, mids and highs.
I recommend getting the Bluetooth wireless unit. the charge lasts more than 8 hours and the range is also excellent.
