Shure has thrown everything but the kitchen sink into their flagship SE846 ear buds. Four drivers, incredible frequency response and Bluetooth 5.0. There are also three connector cables included: a cable to connect via a standard 3.5mm stereo cable, a cable with mic for your phone and a cable dongle with a mic\battery\Bluetooth. Also included are an amazing selection of earpieces, the ability to customize tone quality with changeable nozzle inserts and a nice case. Overall it is an impressive presentation. As it should be at this price. But how do they sound? In one word, impressive.

I sat down with these over a couple of afternoons to get an appreciation for what they could do. I tried the different nozzles to get the sound I was looking for (the three options are balanced, warm and bright). I tried all the different earpieces to get a just right fit - necessary to get the full frequency response from the earbuds. I listened with the cables and via Bluetooth. I listened to mp3 files (across several bit rates), FLAC files and CDs. I listened to rock, blues, classical and jazz music. I listened to movies. And after I got everything tuned to my liking, I was rewarded with some of the richest sound over a headset that I have ever heard.

When I first tried the SE846, I was impressed but something was off (for my tastes). The midrange tones were magnificent. I mean so rich and nuanced I felt like the singing was just for me. Kind of hard to express other than the presence of the artist was intense and came through with a level of detail not often found in headsets. At the same time, the lows were crisp and distinct without being punchy at all. But the high end was weak. While crisp, the highs did not hold up to the amazing midrange. But after some fussing with nozzles and earpieces, my ears went “Oh yeah”. By using the ‘bright’ nozzles, ditching the Bluetooth and plugging in the 3.5mm cable, and using different sized memory foam earpieces for each ear, I achieved listening nirvana. I can’t say enough about how impressive the soundstage\detail\nuance of the SE846 really is.

Could anything be improved? While I kind of like the industrial looking 3.5mm audio cable, smooth and sleek are not adjectives I would choose to describe it. The cable is very sturdy but looks like it was stuffed in an overpacked drawer for too long. Also, there are two Bluetooth issues. First, listening over Bluetooth really changes the character of music. The breathtaking midrange becomes pedestrian and the highs get a little higher – making these headphones sound much like headphones costing much less. Granted, Bluetooth is not known to have the same quality as a direct connection, but this is a rather big difference. Second, the Bluetooth range is terrible. I got maybe 6 feet before the first dropouts could be heard. On the plus side, there was no latency, so everything was synched while watching movies.

I have some quality B&O, Sony and Sennheiser headsets to compare these Shure earbuds to. Overall, the SE846 have immersive sound that is balanced and a real treat to hear. They take some tweaking to get right, but the reward is first rate listening. The Bluetooth is a nice extra that is included but does not have to be used as it is a separate cable. Plus, no one is buying these for the Bluetooth I would think.

As a shure user for almost a decade, I was excited to try these out. In the package, you have the traditional 3.5mm cord, as well as 2 others, which includes a wireless Bluetooth adapter. The traditional 3.5mm input in my go to for sessions and I have to say, the drives in these units is over the top in quality! Super clear mid and highs, and deep and fulfilling lows! Absolutely gives you the best possible quality to hear the rest of your band! The ability to choose between the silicone or foam tips as well creates a fit and feel that is best for literally anyone! Is you are in a band and don't want custom IEM such as studio 64, or even an audiophile and want to take your personal music to the next level, these are for you! Could not be more impressed with these monitors!

Very nice set of headphones. The noise cancelling is amazing it blocks out all outside noise.
There are several setups included in the package. You can opt for the bluetooth setup using the included bt2 cord/adapter. They quickly paired with my phone with no issues.
There is also a corded option to listen as normal headphones and plug into any stereo headphone Jack. There's also an adapter included to go from the 3.5mm jack to the larger 6.35mm jack.

Finally the last corded option has the built in microphone and in line controller for use with cell phones both for listening to audio and on phone calls.

There are several audio adjustment components in which you can tweak your sound preferences. The manual briefly touches on this but doesnt really specify which of the 2 extras are what, so you are left to install each and find the best of your liking.

I've tried these on several phones (Note 9 and iPhone X) These definitely outshines on the iPhone as they are designed for apple products. On both phones the max volume still wasnt high enough for my liking, especially at this price tag. The bass that everyone boasts about wasn't impressive to me either. I have a set of corded J** XL headphones thst deliver far deeper bass and much higher top volume at a mere fraction of the price.

For my purposes though these has an impressive amount of extras and multiple configurations you won't find elsewhere the max volume and deep bass aren't worth the expense. These are definitely not everyday amateur headphones and I possibly just don't have the best equipment to get the full output and potential of them despite my high end cell phones.
