I like the software and I'm used to it, but I instinctively grab my wallet every time I use it. I will give you my $40 a year, but I don't want to store my information in your cloud or be pestered relentlessly to buy other stuff you know I don't need (Audit protection anyone?).
Just take my money and don't make me feel bad about it.
Second, Windows 7 is NOT supported any more beginning this year. That is clear enough from the list of Platforms right under the product title and from the list of Operating Systems under WINDOWS SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS in the detailed description. Last year's TurboTax warned every time I launched it that Windows 7 is no longer supported by Microsoft, so I did not expect it to be supported this year, and it isn't.
Third, I bought the disc version and it installed just fine on my Windows 10 desktop. I can confirm that this Deluxe version contains schedules C and D (which you may remember Intuit tried to remove from the Deluxe version some years ago). I'm glad they continue to include these and all related forms in Deluxe.
Fourth, the fact that some schedules and forms are not finalized is because the IRS has not finalized them. And now that the IRS is busy sending out the second stimulus payments (EIP2 as they call it) I suspect that may delay the IRS from finalizing some forms (but I don't know that for sure).
Lastly, TurboTax Deluxe seems to me to be the same excellent product it has been for many years. I was able to complete my initial best guess that I always do this time of year so that I have confidence in the 4th estimated tax payment that I need to make by Jan 15. BTW, tax tip, don't forget that Standard Deduction filers can still deduct up to $300 in charitable contributions for 2020 due to the CARES Act. TurboTax handled that just fine for me.
This is the best buy of the group and does 90% of what the others will do. Skip Basic and for most users TurboTax Deluxe has all you need. If you live in a state with no income tax, save yourself about ten bucks by choosing the federal version only.
Premier adds a little piece of mind with videos that you will not need after the first year or two of using TurboTax. Most users have very similar returns from you to year so once past the initial setup, any of the versions copy last year’s return no matter which of the versions you previously used. We have rental property income, a supposed advantage with Premier, but realistically, I bring up last year’s TurboTax return next to this year’s when doing taxes. I know from the previous year which items to place where within the various software screens. The “maximize next year’s refund” add on with this version is really not needed; all versions provide guidance and “what if” modeling for next year.
TurboTax Home and Business
If you have employees or need to send anyone a 1099, you definitely want to upgrade to this version. For example, if hire freelance workers on an ongoing basis and pay them more than $600 during a calendar year, the IRS wants you to send them a 1099 form. If you have salaried employees, Home and Business is also quite adept at knocking out W-2 forms easily and professionally.
Hope this helps avoid tax headaches so we all can move on to the more relaxing things in life! In any case, may your refunds be prosperous!
