2.0 de 5 estrellas Don't give them your home phone!
Reseñado en los Estados Unidos el 30 de octubre de 2010

Because of nerve damage I have a difficult time typing and thought that this software would be useful. I purchased a good digital microphone and installed the software. Setup seemed easy enough and the learning software was reasonable. I didn't use it much because it seemed to have problems with Microsoft products (though I could buy an upgrade that - in theory - worked better). A couple weeks later I purchased another piece of software for learning a foreign language and soon neither worked. I uninstalled the language software and reinstalled the Dragon software and was plagued by a window that was always trying to re initiate the program (never successfully). Not an uncommon problems I researched it! If I completely wiped out the program (including deleting the sub-directory and clearing out the registry) the program would work once. I have Windows 7 64bit, 12 gigs of ram, an i7 chip and 2 terabytes of HD space so hardware should not be a problem. I gave up on Nuance.

Then the cards and email came from Nuance to buy version 11. They were worse than the most persistent telemarketer. I ignored all the cards and mail and then the phone calls came. Even after I listened to one sales person's entire pitch and told them no repeatedly they STILL called and emails every day. I rue the day i gave them a valid phone number, email address and home address. If you do buy this software give them a PO box and not your real phone number!!

How well does the software work? Not great, but acceptable for someone who has the time and patience to go back over and correct 30%.

The new software claims a MUCH better rate of recognition. Instead of giving purchasers an update, they chose to soak people by getting them to buy a new package.

I gave them two stars instead of one because for some applications they do work better that typing it all in by hand, but do not be foolish enough to believe that this software will transform how you enter words into your computer.

2.0 de 5 estrellas For All the Awards It Has Won...
Reseñado en los Estados Unidos el 29 de marzo de 2010

Given all the awards Nuance claims Naturally Speaking has won, you would be forgiven for believing its speech recognition is almost flawless. But that is far from the truth.

First off, as it admits, it is far less accurate when you speak single words or in short bursts than when you speak longer phrases (because context helps it decipher your speech). That might seem like a plus -- a boast that, "Hey, you don't need to speak sloooowly; Naturally Speaking can keep up with you." But the reality for creative writers (like me) is that we don't necessarily create in whole sentences -- the muse often comes a word or two at a time. And actually, that's true even for people writing mundane things like letters to utility suppliers. Furthermore, if you do speak in a stream-of-consciousness and Naturally Speaking makes even one error in, say, a 10-word phrase or sentence, it's that much more of a pain to go over and correct -- and to train NS for the future -- than if you had only spoken a word or two at a time.

Secondly, there are some kinds of error that NS simply will not learn to prevent, no matter how many times you correct them and try to train NS. My hunch is that this is the result of weaknesses in the programming, specifically a lack of grammatical sophistication. The way it handles proper nouns is one example. It has no trouble with well-known names that are presumably part of its built-in vocabulary -- Moscow; William -- but if your text makes reference to a somewhat unusual proper noun, there's no way of training NS to give that proper noun an initial cap even when it is not the first word in a sentence. Direct speech presents a similar issue. Unless it comes at the beginning of a sentence, NS will give the first word inside quotes a lowercase initial letter, presumably because it has not been -- cannot be? -- programmed to recognize that, in certain circumstances, grammatical convention requires an initial cap even in the middle of a sentence. (Example: He said, "Don't go.") The only way around these problems is to laboriously spell out the word-formatting each time.

A reliable voice-recognition program could be a boon in my line of work, but I've found NS too error-prone to be a net labor-saver. Its manufacturer's claim that it improves efficiency manifold is theoretical rather than an honest evaluation of the software in everyday use. The undeniable fact that people can talk faster than they can type is pretty much a red herring when they can't THINK, creatively, faster than they can type, or the software doesn't turn their words into type with virtually perfect accuracy.

2.0 de 5 estrellas Needs older versions of Microsoft Word
Reseñado en los Estados Unidos el 25 de septiembre de 2010

I have been using Dragon NaturallySpeaking 8 for several years at home and at work. I have done training for DNS at my company. DNS 8 worked fine on Windows XP and pre 2007 versions of Microsoft Word on some fairly old/moderately slow computers.

But when I used DNS 10 in Microsoft Word Starter 2010 with Windows 7, sometimes I could spellcheck text and sometimes I couldn't and I would have to do it manually.

Nuance informed me that; "Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 Standard is not supported on Microsoft Word Starter 2010. It is only supported up to MS Office 2007."

My solution has been to use the Writer program in OpenOffice. Even if the program is not fully supported by DNS 10, at least spellcheck works with OpenOffice.

Also, formatting text with DNS 10 isn't as good as DNS 8. For instance even in the Dragon text edit program, Dragon Pad, bolding or unbolding selected text is often difficult to do correctly. Nuance customer support doesn't know what the problem is.

Is this because I have a Sony laptop (VAIO VPCEE25FX) with an AMD processor? I'm not sure but one DNS support site (knowbrainer) recommended only using the fastest Intel processors with DNS 10.

So, I can't recommend this program for people who use Microsoft Word 2010. And don't be surprised if the basic formatting of text doesn't work if you use Windows 7.

2.0 de 5 estrellas Bugs bugs bugs too many bugs

Well I give this review a two star rating. Because with all the research that I've done I thought I was ready for this program I downloaded the 10.1 version for Windows 7 64-bit system. I thought I'd did everything right. But I was wrong. At first I couldn't even open the program. The program told me that I needed (and higher speech program) something I don't even remember what it said. I am not very computer savvy I know little bit about computers just through trial and error alone. I think I spent four hours just trying to open the program. On Nancy's website I looked up support after support after supporters for this program and still did not even find anything looked up things on my computer. I tried so many things I can't even tell you anymore what I did how I got this thing to start running. But I finally got it to start running. The dictation part works very well. I've only had it for a 24-hour period. I haven't figured everything out yet the program is still learning how I speak it works better than the speech recognition on Windows 7. But I can only give this program two star rating. Because when you buy a new program out-of-the-box I think it should work with very little problems I think it should at least work with the most recent Windows. But now that I have it working now I really like it. Still has a few bugs to work out.
PS I dictated the entire review with Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I think there was only three or four mistakes the program is still learning how I speak I'm happy with it now that I have it working right.

2.0 de 5 estrellas Can not run as administrator.
Reseñado en los Estados Unidos el 12 de septiembre de 2010

I only use my computer when I am logged on as a super administrator. I get an error message should not be run in elevated mode and the program will not start.
What difference does it make to this program how I am running my computer. I should be able to run MY Computer the way I like not the way some computer programmer think I should.
This check seems to be something a programmer thought would be a cool item to check.

I contracted Nuance and tech support was NO HELP. Do not buy this software.
