I'd been thinking about getting a surround-sound system for a while but didn't think I had the space in my already cluttered living room, and they seemed a tad expensive just for a bit of extra noise.
On a whim, upon seeing the good price and favourable reviews on Amazon, I plumped for this one. It arrived the next day. Sturdy box, very heavy. Took a couple of hours to install in my oddly-shaped domicile with a little rearrangement of furniture. Installation was reasonably simple despite the instructions being bizarrely presented on various shapes and sizes of paper, creating unnecessary confusion, repetition and providing too much information for instant clarity. Scratchy head for a while.
All connectors finally plugged in, switched it on. WOW. I didn't know it would be this good!
It isn't just loud, it brings new life to TV broadcasts, 5.1 DVDs and even 5.1 compatible CDs (used to be called "quadraphonic" in the 1970s). The shape of the amplifier/Blue-ray player looks cool. The speakers look cool. The subtly positioned single white illuminating LED on the front looks cool.
Any downsides? 1) The LED display looks old fashioned and naff, and is difficult to read even in the dark (why isn't OLED more prevalent? It's been around for years and looks superb). 2) The screen menus are unclear and awkward to navigate, even though I only use the basic functions. 3) This claims to be a 1000 watt device. What?? It is very loud at full volume but so is my 50 watt hi-fi amp. I would be very surprised if this thing uses more than 100 watts for its sound output.
All things considered, I still think it deserves 5 *****. I bought it for cinematic sound in my living room, and that's what I've got.
Bought this after comparison of few of it's rivals. I didn't realize it could create a real theatre atmosphere. What a theatre it is? Mesmerising sound.
- Using it with my Sony 4K television. Just one arc cable connected from home theatre to bravia 4k tv. That's all. Remote of home theatre and tv works interchangeably for common functions. - Awesome sound experience. If the content is 5.1 track, then it truly creates theatre atmospher. - For 2 track sound as well, it does the justice for the price. Just click 'Foot ball' button on remote at any time to get 2 channel sound to get delivered on all 6 speakers. :) - Hats off to amazon for fast delivery. - Bad sony installation / demo experience. The installer is very unpleasant and don't seems to know any thing about home theatre. He is keep asking me wheher he could place all 6 speakers in front of tv itself instead of installing 2 of them at rear. When I questioned why, his reply "any way it is going to delivery sound whereever it is placed.'. Sony keep watching your local install team. They are doing very poor job.
Be prepared to spend an hour or two unpacking and setting it all up. For the price it's good value. Unfortunately it comes with no instruction book, so you are left on your own to try to figure how everything works. I have a Samsung TV and the Sony takes at least 30 seconds to decide what input its receiving (TV or DVD etc.). It's not as quick as my old Samsung DVD player. Sound is good, but to me there is too much base. You can tweak up the front speakers & reduce the woofer but not enough for me.
I think buying an All-In-One System is a mistake, with so many systems active it burns out quickly. This Home Theatre System was great for a couple of months, but then it stopped working properly. It would constantly flash it's L.E.D at me and stopped playing all sound. Likely an issue with the motherboard which i can't fix. I had to hard reset it several times for it to even turn on and load its menus, but now I've been issued a refund for it. If you can buy another system, I recommend doing so.
Great value for money. I have this hooked up to an optical splitter to take my PS4, Sky box and TV when needed. There is only one optical input! Sound is great, bass kicks and bluetooth connects without issues. Just press the bluetooth option on the remote and connect with your device/phone and you're connected. I saw a review on here that you couldn't adjust the levels of the Sub, you can! Its in the settings where you can adjust the levels of each speaker. You cannot switch the front and rear speakers however so make sure the fronts will fit where you want them as they're very tall!
Mine has been stuck in a boot loop since September 2019. I reported this to Sony when it was still in warranty and they told me to go pay a shop to repair it: I didn't.
I kicked up a massive fuss and tweeted them etc. They finally realised I was serious - by then Corona hit and we were all in lockdown, we still are.
They said they would honour my expired warranty as it took them so long to listen to me, but I am still unable to leave the house to take it anywhere to get it fixed under warranty: almost a year later.
I don't expect to be leaving lockdown any time soon.
But by God, don't buy this product. Sony are con artists with terrible support. Just Google any sort of sony support and you will be met with terrible feedback.
Two years of a faulty product taking up space in my flat is enough. Boycotting this scourge of a company for good.
Early days yet but so far love it! Menu layout visible when tv switched to hdmi connected to the Sony. Bit like PS3 xmb (cross menu bar?) you go left to right to select category then up and down for item, some are sub menus. Easy really. In speaker settings you'll find test tones and independent boost or attenuate settings for each speaker. Spotify on my iPhone Bluetooth ed nicely. Plays cds nicely. Also tried Netflix on virgin box, jack Ryan shadow recruit. Helicopter explosion felt real! If you don't have arc hdmi socket available an optical cable works fine. Finally tried my iPod via the USB socket. Old iPod not fully supported. Plays MP4 videos but not my music collection. Internet connection working via direct network cable to router. I haven't tried the wifi connection.
Overall a nice tidy well made setup. I was lucky getting mine when in stock. Don't be put off if you have to wait a while for fresh stock, it's worth it! Finally replaced my old Sony which we got second hand. Loved that but connection faults at back caused us to give it to my dad. If he can fix it he's welcome to it.
The extra features make this unit a good buy. Very pleased customer. Thanks Amazon and Sony.
It's an ok entry level system. I have it connected to my Sony brava tv takes ages for sound to pick up once you turn it on.
Picture is fine though the sound level is too low for the power I've read on these reviews mentioning that it's too quiet unfortunately this is true! It's shocking really.
One other thing the Bluetooth regularly cuts out, again mentioned here on other reviews it's not my device as it's two meters away and plays without the problems to my £25 speaker in same location it's obviously a Sony issue.
I think in future I will sell this and buy a more pricier product as it's a disappointmrnt in places and an embarrassment to Sony.
Oh just found the USB port it's front right you have to flick the cover off.
If you can afford more pay for more and don't buy this. If you can't th en you'll have to put up with these issues.
Just realised that you can change each speaker loudness (up or down} in the audio settings so I turned the sub woofer down as it's too heavy.
thought it was a weak sounding surround at first then i found the settings ..this baby has some kick to it glad i bought a sony tv to go with it as it makes connecting it a lot easier .the internet content is ok too ,but when used with plex media manager the ability to stream from pc to this makes it a fantastic system .
