4.0 de 5 estrellas Not as simple as I was expecting

Got this to replace a 20 year old P-touch to save cost on label tape. Some of the features are nice and the tape is less expensive but I have not figured out how to make a label with a simple square boarder yet. There are lost of fancy frames and templates built in but, it is more difficult to use than the old one and doesn't do as well with simple labels. Like smartphones that get better and better at everything else but are less and less effective as a phone.

I was expecting this to use less tape. My 20 year old label maker always had a 3/4" lead that was not printed and usually needed to be cut off. This label maker still has the 3/4" blank lead but it cuts that off automatically, and cuts at the end of the print too. I would have thought in 20 years they would have come up with a way to not waste 3/4" on ever print, but then again that would eat into their tape sales.

I like that it connects to the computer and I have found that using the computer software is easier than just making a label. I also like that it recognizes the size of the tape that is installed.

Would I recommend this label maker? That is difficult to answer because there are simpler ones to use. I think it does a good job. If you want to create your labels on you PC and print them this is the way to go. If you just want a simple portable label printer I would suggest you look at other models.

4.0 de 5 estrellas can't hurry through the learning process

I'm not a techie... I generally avoid learning new electronics. This was not as difficult as I feared... though I had to slow down and skim the instruction book repeatedly as it appears to have information scattered throughout it that would apply to my basic labeling needs... not especially well organized from my perspective. Hardest was just figuring out if it had the capability to do something I wanted... as I did not know when to Stop searching for help getting a certain appearance, because the labeler simply wasn't designed to do that thing. A page of various sorts of sample labels with step by step instructions for how to get each type would have been so much more helpful in organizing the booklet, but that wasn't to be found. It was like trying to find how to repair a small car problem by searching an auto repair manual, index inadequate, info scattered into non-intuitive categories. If you have a bunch of different labels, (for me that was something like "Small Hinges", "Sand paper", "Mortise locks", "Lamp parts") you get so much more bang for your buck if you print them out all at one go, with a space between each word and then cut them apart from each other with scissors, as you avoid the built in waste factor that is designed into the label cutting programming of this machine. Since the tape backing splits in half length-wise, it is not difficult to remove the backing even if you cut them by hand. The largest font on the largest size tape allows me to find something in a shop drawer from across the room, even with my old eyes. The one thing I found disappointing was that when putting a border round words, I couldn't use as large of a print font size as I wished, the programming would not allow me to completely fill the interior of the border with larger font sized letters... they had to have more space round the writing inside the border than I wanted. The labels stuck well to various finished and unfinished wood and metal drawers in the shop.

I use mine constantly, and have for over a year. Just recently I decided to label all my power bricks and usb chargers, only had 200. I spent 6 hrs writing down voltage and current, which even when being super efficient creates a lot of waste. Just did an example print and measured about 3/4in of waste per job.

Pros:
-It's easy to use, nice self-contained computer-less option.
-Decent battery life, was using it non-stop for 5-6hrs for that labeling project.
-Alright keyboard, not the best, but big enough that you don't accidentally hit other keys
-Glad they allow you to choose "Tiny"/"Narrow" Margins between prints, since on the normal settings, it's like an inch of blank space on each side, very obnoxious and wasteful.
-Decent display with decent enough viewing angles, clearly a cheap LCD panel, but bright, colorful enough, and accurately represents what is being printed out. It even offers a 1:! representation that's pretty accurately 1:1. Though, I'm getting older, and already are prescribed glasses, I like that I can enlarge it so I don't have to wear my glasses to use them.

Cons:
-Produces a lot of waste. Even when I was being SUPER efficient, and pre-organising my chargers by same voltage and current values, it still creates a lot of waste. I had about 100 3/4in blanks produced for the whole project or about over 6ft of tape wasted. I get the necessity of the blanks, but I think you could achieve the same effect, with only 1/4in ejections.
-It's not centered on the tape, which if you have OCD or a sensitivity to that sort of thing like I do, then it gets frustrating. The Top and Bottom margin disparity isn't nearly as bad as the Left and Right margin gap.

Would like:
-I wished this had the ability to "lock" the shift key, not "Caps Lock", but as it is now, if I want a Capital "B" for instance, it operates like a computer keyboard. Where you have to hold down "Shift" and press the letter. Which wouldn't be a terrible problem, but the keyboard is very squishy and small. Great for one-finger pecking. Not good for Home Row typing. So, pressing the shift key would lock it for the next key press be it to make a symbol via the number rows, or capitalising letters.

Conclusion:

While I haven't updated the firmware or checked to see if the firmware is out of date, out of the box, this is a great product for what it's worth. I don't feel like it's overpriced, and the features are helpful. I would choose this one over the $40 black and white LCD version.

Photos Included:
-The first one is the waste that this produces each new print job. This only gets made after you're done with a collection of prints and start a new one. For instance, I had to print out 10 "5v 2.4A" labels, which means this only produced ONE of these 3/4in blanks for that job.
-Second Picture shows off the margins on this thing and how they're off centered. Also, I do have my end margin set to the minimum settings to reduce waste. Since around me, we don't have a store/stores with a great selection for tape options (mostly white on black).

4.0 de 5 estrellas Wastes lots of label stock if you don't change a setting.
For the most part I like the label maker. Easy to change label stock, and see what's in the machine. Wide range of label stock to choose from. Easy to understand screen preview of label.

I JUST found an option to change the cut length of the labels so it doesn't waste so much label stock! (create label, Fn key, Cut Option, Small Margin). Not that easy to find, or know that option is there... It still wastes a bit, but half what it wasted before. And it cuts the extra off, which I guess is nice that I don't have to do that anymore. Would be nice if this option was a bit more discoverable, and/or there design of the label stock was not in a way that would waste as much. I'm going to remove a star because of that.

Otherwise, better than the handheld one I had before. Much better labels than the thermal stuff the old label maker used.

4.0 de 5 estrellas Good label maker

20220414: I bought this thing a while back, did not use right away. Now I've used it on a variety of items. Here's my experience:

User Interface: It is a little clunky, but I've not seen a label maker yet that isn't odd in one way or another. It is reasonably easy to type in the text for the label, but it is just a little annoying to have to remember to erase it before starting the next label. It is several buttons to push, including a confirm check, but you get used to it after doing it several times.

Tape: This unit uses the Brother split-down-the-middle tape, this has been how Brother does tape for a long time. It is fairly easy to split and peel, so all good from that aspect. The adhesion is great. I've put these labels on light switches, paper files, and tool cabinet drawers. They adhere very well. The tape is thick, sturdy, and holds up for a long time.

This P-Touch has a built-in tape cutter. It wastes a good amount of tape, but I suppose that is what is required for the machine to have enough tape to move through the unit. Brother could have designed the output to be a little closer to the edge of the machine, but all in all, it isn't that big of an issue.

Overall: This is maybe my third P-Touch over the years. Like the previous ones, it is a good, solid unit. It runs on power cord or batteries, and functions solo, or plugged into a computer. It is a solid, and has been reliable.

This device is a delight to have around and to use. It makes home, garage, and office organization such a breeze. The variety of tape and font colors on the market is amazing, giving you infinity possibilities of how and where you can use these labels. Highly recommended!

One of the best features of the device is that you can remove a tape cartridge and replace with another at any time. No need to cut off tape or re-feed anything. All of the work is done inside the cartridge, so everything is super simple and allows you to get creative on the fly! Wonderful design.

WASTED MARGINS

However, as others have pointed out, there is one design flaw in this device: there is ALWAYS a 1" wasted margin of tape every time you print a label. Brother gives you 2 "Cut Options" in the menu:

1) Large margins - this adds 1" blank margins on both the left and right ends of your label, in case you want blank spaces (why anyone would ever want this is kind of confusing to me, but it's the default option if you need this)

2) Small margins - although this does eliminate the extra 1" of wasted tape on the right end of your label, it will still ALWAYS waste an extra 1" of tape on the left side and simply cuts it off for you to discard EVERY TIME YOU PRINT A LABEL.

I've noticed that my average label length (other than the margins) is about 2-3", so what all of this means is that the wasted margins will end up wasting 25-33% of the tape. So keep this in mind when you purchase new tape cartridges. Thankfully there are lots of 3rd party tape suppliers now that offer similar tape options as Brother but at a fraction of their prices, so the wasted tape isn't too costly to your bottom line. But still, do yourself a favor and collect all those wasted margins the printer chops off. You can write on them with a permanent marker and use them as little hand-written labels. That's better than just tossing them in the garbage as Brother seemingly intended for you to do.

Other than the wasted margin design flaw, this is a fantastic device and well worth the price. You cannot go wrong.

4.0 de 5 estrellas Warning: Older TZ Tapes Cannot Be Used on This Device
My quest started with an attempt to get an older Brother PT-2500PC label printer to work on a Windows 7 PC. It had provided yeoman service on an XP machine, but there was simply no way to get it working in the newer OS for lack of driver support.

The answer came in the form of the PT-D600 -- a standalone label printer that also provides PC connectivity via USB. The Windows label design/editor application that can be downloaded is decent, and the device is half the price of the Brother P-touch CUBE Plus (PT-P710BT), which can only be used with a computing device and can connect via Bluetooth -- a feature of no interest to me.

But here's the rub. Followers of the Brother PT printers know that they are marketed like Gillette razors: the consumable cartridges, without which the host device is useless, are expensive. So, silly me, when I chanced upon a sale, I stocked up for my older PT-2500PC. Little did I know that the newer PT printers will not accept the older TZ cartridges. So now I'm stuck with a bunch of cartridges I can't use with my new printer (and which will be available soon at a popular auction site). Brother could have done a better job of warning potential buyers in their marketing blurbs, but I can't accuse them of lying about it. They clearly state the PT-D600 uses TZe (not TZ) tapes.

So, be warned if you have a bunch of TZ tapes you want to use with this product. You can't. (I even tried drilling a hole in a sacrificial TZ cartridge to accommodate the extra locating pin in the newer printer's cartridge bay. That was a no-go.) Be prepared to buy new cartridges. The good news is that there are now third party suppliers offering compatible label cartridges. They seem to be getting decent reviews, and I'll be trying out a couple of them in due course.

Aside from all of that, I have to say this seems like a solid product so far. I'll update if need be.

I like being able to use different size labels. There are a couple of tweeks I would have made if I were king of the forest, but nothing that would keep me from buying it. Battery life is quite a bit shorter than my old machine, but this one does so much more. I have not tried using it from my computer yet so I have no opinion about that feature. Also we are asked the rate adhesion which is not a function of the machine but of the label tape. I use off brands and have had no problem in that reguard.
