If your AVR can do Atmos or even if it just does upsampling of non-Atmos content to these speakers, I HIGHLY recommend you buy a set. They are tiny, cheap, and they add—quite literally—an entirely new dimension to your listening experience. I've been wowed by battle scenes in scifi movies as well as by the enveloping atmosphere in Blu-rays of Beethoven symphonies. You feel as if you are in space or in the Musikverein. Remarkable.
This is the simplest, cheapest, and most impressive improvement in my home entertainment equipment since I bought my first separate amplifier in 1979. You owe it to yourself to get a set.
I already had a 5.2 set of NHT EVO speakers. I really have loved those and found no reason to change with Atmos around, so I decided to double down on NHT and went with these for my height channels. What a great buy! They are super well made and sound good. I was concerned that they would not hold their own with my multi thousands of dollars of EVOs, but this was unwarranted.
If you are upgrading for Atmos, this is a great way to go!
They recommend placing these within six feet of the ceiling which I think is a bit conservative. I played around with different positions and orientations and I feel like 1-2 feet from the ceiling is the sweet spot to get the height effect, but to also diffuse the sound enough so that it feels ambient versus directional.
I had ordered Elac debut 2.0 Atmos speakers. They did expand the soundstage but the height channel sound effects were missing. I came across these and decided to give it a try. These channels go much deeper than the elacs however these donot have a tweeter which elac had. What's great in these is higher sensitivity so they are louder. I have them in 5.1.2 setup and I definitely hear height effects in these and want to add another pair to a full 5.1.4 config. They are also very tonally similar to my q acoustics 3050i Cinema pack and their small size makes for easier installation.
I picked up four of these from a warehouse deal twenty percent off sale. I've hooked up the front to an Onkyo M-5010 (also on a 20% sale) and initially had them on top of my Emotiva towers but then mounted them on the wall using the keyhole mount. Playing a few Atmos blu-rays they definitely provide a good front presence and handle the 75 watt amp fine. I haven't heard any other Atmos systems so I have nothing to compare the quality, but for the price I'm totally satisfied.
