It’s called a professional sampler but, it is terrible for sampling and it's not for pros.
When I tried to sample I was astonished by how terrible the trim options are. There are basically knobs to adjust the set start and end between 0 and 999. However, there does not seem to be any way to adjust the knob increments from 1, for example other devices you hold down shift so turning the knob increments by a factor of 10. This means that if you want to cut a sample in half you have to keep turning that nob 500 increments. This was the deal breaker for me and makes this feel just like a toy and not a bit of pro kit.
Another, issue is that there are filters and tuning for the playback, however, it took me a while to figure this out; all my samples sounded terrible when played back but that was because out of the box these are set to unusual values. It’s not obvious how to set playback to be the raw recorded sample as there is not explanation in the manual or “play raw" feature so it seems you need to adjust these each time.
Overall, if you just want to play back samples you’ve already got then it is probably worth the budget price. I decided to return and get something more usable for recording (Akai MPC Live II is looking worth the investment after this)
This is a little bit better than completely useless. It doesn't play samples back at the beginning, it starts a couple of milliseconds into the audio. When looping, there's a dip in volume as it repeats. Akai have been relentless in not bothering to update the firmware. I can live with the long load times, and the velocity sensitivity is great (Which earns it a star). Please don't bother with this, it's a waste of your money and time.
This sampler has been sat on my desk for over a month now I’ve not been able to get a sound out of it. Not only does it not work; when I plugged it into my laptop to see if I could get it working with that, it killed my computer and I’ve had to buy a new one. I’ve sent a support ticket through to AKAI on their website but I’ve still not heard anything back after weeks of waiting. Even if it did work though the instruction manual is so confusing and unhelpful I doubt I’d be able to do much with it anyway. I’ve brought a new laptop and sampler and thrown this one in the bin and I’m happier for it. Would not recommend!
I've had two of these from Amazon now, both with faults. Samples don't play from the beginning, SD card read errors, choke control doesn't work on longer samples, midi receive channel is preset and not changeable (CH 1) unit completely locks up (time to time) requiring a power off / on. Akai support for both MPX samplers is practically non existent, they just don't respond ! Another Akai product I shall be returning :(
If you're hoping the latest firmware will save you, you're out of luck.
My unit arrived promptly. Had an EU adapter which is no use to me in the UK. Supplied firmware was version 1.0.9.
I'd read all the poor reviews but hoped the latest firmware updates would fix all the bugs you can see reported here and elsewhere. So I upgraded to the latest (1.0.19). And the thing won't boot up again. The flash writer utility still works so I tried version 1.0.18.
Looks like this is a batch from an earlier hardware revision which won't take the latest updates
