Incredible recorder with crappy connection speeds to get the files.

Roland, the recordings are crystal clear. The two AA Ni-MH batteries I can recharge last up to 15 hours. Remarkable! This is an awesome device.

Works perfectly with my Apple iPhone SE with the App. I can control the unit at a gig with my phone 30' away and place the unit on a camera tripod because of the mount screw hole on the device. Nice. Placing the recorder and tripod where necessary for the best sound is possible with this device.

Big mistake with transfer file speeds. Why the heck did Roland make the USB slow down to what seems USB 1.0 speeds? I can tell it's not even USB 2.0 speeds. I have a USB 3.0 capable mac. If I want the files quickly, I would have to eject the tiny micro-SDHC card, put it into a Micro SD adapter, and then put that into my mac and get the true speed of the memory card. Or I would have to buy an MicroSDHC hub and connect that hub to the mac. In fact, that would be easier than mounting that tiny card into the larger Micro SD adapter and inserting that adapter into my Mac. But both are a hassle. My mac has a built-in SD memory card slot. The easiest method is indeed using a USB cable, but again, expect nearly USB 1.0 speeds.

What bean counter over at Roland thought this would be a good idea? It took 1 full hour to transfer 1GB of recordings to my Mac. If you have time to park the recorder and dump it, it's fine. If you're under pressure, don't bet on the transfer speed. Roland, that decision was ridiculous. You almost approached perfection. I suspect an accountant wanted to cut some kind of cost and save $2.00 of expense for a more expensive USB chip. That's my hunch.

Or, maybe the chips for USB 2.0 and above would make the remarkable 15 hour battery life a pipe dream due to higher current drain, even when idle. I don't know. Maybe it was the engineers who suggested this to get more battery life?

Improvements I would gladly pay extra for:

-Make it USB 3.0, or USB 2.0 at the least. Even 10 hours battery life is remarkable for a device like this.
-Make a metal case but still lightweight and small.
-Keep the door to the battery simple like it is, no complicated door-latch with moving parts like your Edirol R-09 which I bought a long time ago. Complicated mechanical doors to get to the batteries and memory card will break and make the otherwise pristine electronics unusable.

You almost had a home-run and you turned it into a run to second-base. Why?

All that said, I am going to keep it. I can let it park on my mac to transfer audio as I do other things. If I were doing this for work, under pressure, like a journalist, I might skip this device. But I bought this for music mostly. I like the control of it from iPhone. My guess is the next iteration of this device will be the homerun. Cheers.

First off, I record music festivals and other music events that last 5+ hours regularly. I have been using Roland and Edirol recorders for over a decade and they have been great. I have been waiting very patiently for a company to come out with a wireless control option that actually works. When I saw this one, I thought that it looked perfect on paper.
Having the option of dropping markers, splitting files, and checking levels from a remote location at a festival are priceless features for me!

So much so that I talked a friend into also buying one that I do event recording with. I found out last min that this one DOES NOT come with a powersupply and its USB (first red flag for me)

I talk to my friend and he received his before me and told me that during a trip to Europe he tried it out but there were some weird things going on. He said that when using the "line in" from a mixer or other source even at a very low input level the unit ALWAYS lights up like its clipping even when the level meters are not. I asked if he had updated the firmware and he had. I assumed the clipping had to be a setting or something he missed. My recorder showed up, and I ordered two usb power supplies here on Amazon, one for me and one for my friend that was overseas and would be back for our big show in the US. (We have to plug into a regular power source without adapters to reduce the chance of failure)

I immediately updated the firmware on my recorder before doing anything else. I set it up and downloaded the app, and tested the Bluetooth remote at home to make sure it worked and was not dropping connection like some others had posted about here. It all seemed to work fine. I did have to go into the Bluetooth settings and change the "channel" so it would connect, but after that it was fine. I even checked it going out of BT range and coming back to into range while recording and it seemed fine.

Long story long... I got to the festival and the Bluetooth didn't work reliably. I had a person working with me on an iphone connect and it seemed a bit better, but still not good enough. (I use an android google pixel 2)
My recorder also lit up like it was clipping ALL THE TIME. I could not find out what was causing this.

So in a nut shell, this recorder needs a serious firmware update to address these issues. I just ended up using it like my trusty r05. The recording came out fine and was not clipping even though the thing was lighting up like a Christmas tree all weekend while recording.

After the show I returned it. My friend kept his, so hopefully these issues will be addressed. SOON
I really wish SOMEBODY would get this right. All the features I want are there, they just don't work correctly. *sadface*

Can’t pair my Apple AirPods Pro via Bluetooth, I purchased this recorder solely because of BLUETOOTH capabilities. I can use my iPhone app to remote control unit via Bluetooth but not my AirPods. Very disappointed. Star value would be higher if I could use my AirPods....

Great quality audio recorder. Can record wav files in 24 bit 96khz format and low quality MP3 at the same time, which is great for sending quick demos to people you are collaborating with. The built in microphones are pretty good, or you can use the aux in if you are outputting from a mixer or using an external microphone. There is just the one input, so it's a very basic recorder. I've been using a ZOOM H4N for years and to be honest, I think it's a much better product for my use, since it has multiple inputs and XLR. But the R-07 recorder has features the H4N doesn't have.

It's small, very small and fits in your pocket easily. It also has Bluetooth. It works well to listen back to recordings, but I can't use it for recording because of the audio delay. There's a little built in speaker that sounds ok, but it's better to use headphones to monitor playback.

There are some other nice pro features like marking points on your tracks to skip ahead, like if you want to mark the start of a chorus and rewind to it easily. there's also an A > B loop so you can work on a part over and over to practice.

Overall, this is a great little recorder for someone who wants to quickly record song ideas in a high quality format. The audio quality is good enough to use for demo recordings, and if you use a good external mic, it could definitely be used for real vocals if you are in the right environment and get a clean recording. The fastest way to transfer big WAV files is to eject the Micro SD card and use a card reader on your computer. You can also use the USB cable or Bluetooth, but it's slower.

Another reviewer mentioned they got noise when recording under bus power and I wanted to see if my R-07 also had that issue and... it does. I wouldn't recommend using bus power for recording, but the batteries last over 15 hours of continuous recording. If you need longer recording times, there may be a USB cable with a filter on it to help eliminate noise, but I don't have one on hand to test. I like this product but I'm giving it 3 stars because it didn't impress me much at this price.

While this product isn't terrible quality, it doesn't feel like a professional product. Roland quality has been steadily going downhill over the past 20 years, and it's been sad to see. I'm a huge Roland supporter and this product isn't bad but it just shows they are more concerned about profit than making high quality pro audio equipment. Hopefully they turn that around because they used to make some of the most iconic synthesizers and drum machines that are still used in almost every modern dance and rap music genre today.
