4.0 de 5 estrellas Bluetooth was great for mobile recording
Reseñado en los Estados Unidos el 5 de junio de 2018
Color: RojoCompra verificada
I'm not sure what issues the first reviewer ran into. I've had no issues. Bluetooth was great for mobile recording. The Roland CS-10em binuraul mics work well. The onboard mics are clean. Make sure you use mic placement to your advantage. The scenes are useful for quick setup. The size is amazing for remote recording where you don't want to make a scene. Roland has a solid product on their hands.

-- Edit January 2018: I've been using this recorder for live music and binaural recording with the Rolnd cs-10em. The line in no longer functions. For binuaral recording I'm moving on to the Tascam DR-05. The built-in mics still work, but my faith in the device is down.

Real life is in stereo. If you want to record your voice, your music or the world. Roland can do it. The only problem is you can't use it with iOS 14 in your IPad or Iphone. Last Firmware was in 2019 o 2018! Roland WAKE UP! and do give us a 2021 Firmware for 2021.

4.0 de 5 estrellas Best sound quality with a few issues

So I've given this recorder the once over and used it on a paid gig.
I think what it really boils down to with these things is, what are you using it for?
I'll save you some time and say that if you are shooting videography, specifically run-n-gun style video with a DSLR and a fully mobile rig. I don't recommend it.
I'm comparing this to the Zoom H1 and the Tascam DR-07 mkII

Also before I start I use recording tools for several things.
1. I'm a musician so I record ideas
2. I'm a writer, so again, ideas on the fly.
3. I'm a professional photographer and videographer so I record audio for interviews and weddings (mostly Interviews).

I wanted to do a video to illustrate the slight audio differences in the 2 recorders but compression would ruin that so you'll just have to take my word for it.

AUDIO QUALITY - RECORDING
Between the 3, using the Sony ECM-ES3 Lavalier.
The Roland stands out as the cleanest of the 3, after that I would place the Tascam and the Zoom comes in last.
The zoom sounds artificially bassy as if the low-end freqs have been adjusted in the unit.
The Tascam and the Roland are very close but I got the least amount of noise and the most realistic sound out of the Roland.

Using the onboard mics I would put the Tascam at the top on this one, with the Roland and Zoom, almost tied.
The Tascams mics are just really clean, I was honestly surprised by them.
The Roland and Zoom are both decent but they pic up a lot of noise and sound very "crunchy" compared to the clean tones from the Tascam.

EASE OF USE
Hands down the Zoom wins this category. And I think for a lot of consumers this is where you need to decide how you plan to use the unit. On the job when I am just trying to mic someone and get started, knowing that I will be doing some post clean up, I just want decent, clear audio for my weddings and my interviews.
I can have the zoom, placed, miced and recording in a few seconds. That's not the case with the other 2.
Honestly, I think this is because they still use some old methods of getting things started.
Both the Tascam and the Roland use the 2-3 click start method.
Start a new track or session, hit record, then press play.
The Zoom is, press record.
I believe the thinking behind the old method is that they are afraid of buttons being pressed accidentally. However, all of these units have a HOLD/LOCK switch.
On the zoom, I unlock the unit, hit record, lock the unit and walk away. Once locked no button presses will respond so I don't need to worry. The lock button works the same on the Roland as well so the extra steps are just... extra steps.

This issue is compounded by the fact that the Rolands buttons aren't very responsive. You really have to press to get them to work sometimes. To the extent that once in a while I'll just think it's broken.

Another issue is the automation is pretty much nill. On the zoom, I plugged in the lav mic and it instantly recognized what I was using and powered the mic.
On the Roland, I had to go into the sub menu and activate the plug power feature.

Also, all of the recorder settings are buried in menus, low cut, audio format, etc.
With the zoom, they are switches on the outside of the unit.
However, if you start the recording on the Roland you can then press the scene key to switch the limiter settings, which is similar and pretty easy to do.

That said there are a few things I love about the Roland (aside from the sound).
I love that the input toggle is right on the front, for a hands-on interview this is KEY. I can watch my levels and adjust them quickly and smoothly. I can also adjust my headset volume the same way.
The blue tooth feature for headsets is still a bit more of a gimmick IMO as the latency kinda kills the usability for anything other than playback reviewing, but it is nice to be able to have some wireless reviewing sometimes.

It also features a rehearsal mode, marks, scenes, etc. The Roland is clearly built for musicians and people looking for a more feature rich tool.

The Roland is also the only one that can take a 64GB Micro SD. I know that seems like overkill but I personally love it.

DURABILITY
In this one, the Roland wins hands down.
If you look close in the pics this unit has gotten the same rough treatment my others have but the Roland just feels built for it. It is a solid and sturdy unit that I feel like I will have for years.
The Tascam would come in a distant second and the Zoom feels like a dollar store kids toy.
The Rolands sd card slot is also really well sealed and designed. It makes it a bit trickier to get the card in and out but I like it.

SIZE
So the zoom would have to win in this category if I'm trying to get my subject to hold the recorder, even though it's much longer it's very slim and very lightweight.
The Tascam is a beast and I hate having to mic people with it when they will be moving around.
The Roland is a great design because it's short and compact, it looks like it would fit into a pocket really well but it still seems bulky and heavy compared to the Zoom (cost of having a solid well built unit I guess)

OVERALL CONCLUSION
If you are looking for an on the go run-n-gun recorder that you want to just set and forget. I really can't recommend the Roland for that kind of task. While the Zoom is a really cheaply built unit, it caters to quick and easy use and gets the job done.
The Rolands in my view is something that I would use as a musician. Actually, I would prefer it.
I will also be using it more for interviews, especially where I won't have the luxury of micing the subject. Even though the mics aren't as clean as the tascams, I like everything else about it better, especially the input and volume control being right on the front of the unit for quick adjusting.

The design, sound, features, durability, everything is about quality with the Roland. A cheap second would be the Tascam and the zoom is just... a kids toy.

Again, I'd encourage you to think about how you plan to use this.
The zoom has its place and it's almost King in its market for good reason.
but for users wanting more quality and musician style features I think the Roland is a solid buy.

4.0 de 5 estrellas Great for casual use. Phone as a remote is useful. Zooms are better but larger.
Reseñado en los Estados Unidos el 26 de febrero de 2019
Color: Rojo
I often find myself recording audio for projects (voiceovers for radio/TV ads, stuff for podcasting, "screams" of actors at haunted houses to use in soundtracks, etc.). I generally will just use my old iPhone as it is plenty fine for casual use (even in radio/TV), but if I need something more, I use an add-on stereo microphone. They work great, but are clunky.

As a musician, I am familiar with the Roland brand (from drum machines and such) so I thought a standalone unit might come in handy. My quick review is: It's simple and audio quality is as good if not better than what I get with my phone add on. ! It does what it says it does, and it's easier to use than plugging in an add-on to the phone and dealing with apps and such.

HOWEVER, I do not run Android so I couldn't test using it with. But I have friends who are both Android users AND Zoom recorder users, so I thought I'd let them take this unit for a spin and give their take as well. (They were a bit less impressed and are going to stick with their Zoom.)

I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars.

I'm an amateur field recordist, looking to capture nature sounds. The small, compact and lightweight size (5.3oz) of the recorder is very convenient for mobile recording and recording while backpacking. Battery life is long. There is a jack for listening to playback on wired headphones, but it also pairs easily with bluetooth headphones which is great for field recordings because the less I have to touch the recorder the better. I can toss the recorder in a bag and not worry about the mics getting damaged because they are safely contained within the unit.

A lot of people have reported issues with the android remote control app. At first it didn't work for me either - my pixel would scan and find the R-07 but wouldn't connect. I had to turn location services off and then back on and then perform the bluetooth scan to connect the device and be able to use the remote control app. Then it worked great.

I find the remote control app a very nice feature. I can get the recorder setup, walk away to a safe distance and then begin recording reducing the clean up that I have to do in post. Also, since I do nature recordings, there's usually a lag between when I set the recorder up and when the wildlife resumes, so I can have less "dead air time" on my recordings.

I can also mark files silently via the remote rather than using an on-board button which always left a sound on the recording when I used other recorders. I also like that the remote is my phone instead of an additional piece of hardware I have to keep track of.

Sound quality seems comparable to the H4N's built in mics and is good for the price. They are omni not xy mics though. Accessories and accessory packages are much easier to find marketed for Zoom's H4N, but you can find windscreens and other accessories for the R-07. For my work outside I definitely needed a furry windscreen. Adding a windscreen to the recorder covers up part of the screen, which isn't a big deal if you are using the remote anyway.

"Scenes" offer preset settings designed for specific recording situations. This is great for a beginner who has no idea what the settings mean to get good recordings and to learn what the settings do. Also you can modify the settings of the scene to your situation/preferences to be what you need and optionally save it for future use of that scene. The rehearsal function which samples the sound in the room and sets the recording settings optimally for the space also works well.

The SD micro card is a bit difficult to remove. The best method seems to be to press it to release and then turn it upside down and shake it out. There is only one mic/aux input. Upload from the recorder to the computer via usb is slow - slower than it should be. Best to remove the card, put it in an adapter and put it in the computer if you have the SD slot.

This model is about the same price as Zoom's H4N and the Tascam DR-44WL but they have different features that are worth comparing to see which model is the best fit for you. If video is your main plan, you'd probably be better off with a different recorder, like the H5.

4.0 de 5 estrellas Like the Smartphone Remote
Reseñado en los Estados Unidos el 15 de diciembre de 2018

I took this to record my son’s middle school band concert. I mounted it on a short tripod—it has a standard threaded mounting hole—on the stage. I immediately took advantage of the iPhone app to monitor and lower the gain remotely as I was seeing a bit of clipping at first. I didn’t have any success installing the AppleWatch app even thoughI have an Apple Watch 4 running the most recent version of watchOS. Still, the phone app was fine. Nice to monitor the recording when I didn’t want to disturb the performers.

Sound quality was good, but my ears can’t really say it was better than a cheaper, simpler, digital recorder I also placed on stage. My son, who had better ears, say the sound is easily better than that of the Canon camcorder I used to capture the event.

Connected easily via USB to my MacBook Pro and imported into Final Cut Pro with no issues other than my lack of editing expertise.

On device controls are primitive (compared to a smartphone). There was a firmware update available and that was easy enough to install after a couple tries at the understanding the instructions.

Basically, a useful, feature packed digital recorder with good sound capture. Read the manual.
