About half of these opened after a day of sitting, the other half had to be soaked, wrung out and blow-dried in order to be usable, which took about an hour of my time that I'd much rather spend doing other things (plus the water and electricity, and the extra heat which made the AC work harder). After all that, the ones I had to work to expand don't look good and are uneven and wavy.
Do they work? Sort of... they do diffuse some glare for first reflections in the high end, but have almost no effect on anything below the treble. If the foam were more dense, I'm sure they would work better. I also have a huge issue with the MASSIVE amount of thick plastic wrap used to pack them: each pair was wrapped in a heavy vacuum-sealed bag, then those bags were inside more bags, which were in turn packed inside another bag, and finally into a cardboard box. Bloody wasteful!!
These were very cheap, and I suppose I got what I paid for. Unfortunately there's really no way to tell how dense any of these things will be until you get them, so if I need more I will start by buying some that are higher priced and not vacuum-packed into infinity, and will not hesitate to return them if they're as flimsy and difficult as these are.
That said, these were mostly purchased to sprinkle randomly about the room and hide behind canvas paintings, roll up in unseen corners, etc, and they do provide the kind of mild taming I was looking for in this regard. If I'd known all this before unpacking/expanding, I would not have kept them, but as it is I may as well keep them around. Overall a poor value.
