This over rated, noisy (can the raucous loud stuff passing as music) waste of time ( slept through most of it) peopled by so-called actors/actresses of questionable skill isn't worth your time...or $$$. Dame Agatha Christie is groaning from this mockery. It is poorly structured, badly directed, miserably acted and basically craziness gone amuck. Mr Branagh, you did well with Murder on the Orient Express. Good acting...with proven pros...good directing. This? not so.
While I’m a huge fan of David Suchet’s portrayal of Poirot, and less a fan of Kenneth Branagh, it is always good to see a different style of directing in a remake. Many previous reviews that I read (before buying the DVD) actually inspired me to buy it. All the jaded review references to “woke” tell us more about the reviewers than it does the movie itself.
The one thing I do echo is this; if you expect Kenneth Branagh to act like David Suchet, this movie is definitely not for you. However, this is not Branagh’s first go at Poirot, and I knew that going in.
The sets and the scenery make this movie fantastic, and the acting is superb. I have watched the previous versions of this classic many times and while I’m very familiar with the story lines, I loved this different spin. This is 2022 and anyone expecting this to be the same as earlier decades old versions is unrealistic in those expectations. I found the opening scene to be entertaining as an explanation of Poirot’s moustache and the woman who was the love of his life. That said, I’m not a fan of the moustache that Branagh wears as Poirot, but there again, he is not Suchet.
Bottom line, if you are open minded to a new version of Agatha Christie’s classic, you might enjoy this as I did. However, if you are a staunch fan of Suchet’s portrayal of Poirot, you might very well be disappointed. I found this to be a splendid film and will watch it again.
Dvd does not play on US player! All my others do so this is not my machine. No warning that this is not for US region. Amazon is getting very careless about quality of Dvds and now, apparently, labeling.
After reading other product reviews, I see this DVD did not play on other customers DVD players. No region warning accompanied the DVD. It did not play on any of our 3 players, including a Blu-Ray, which plays standard DVDs. Maybe Amazon should investigate this seller.
Recommended. As far as 'woke'? Well, gay and interracial couples are part of our lives. I find this 'woke' criticism to be unreasonable. The film was very enjoyable to watch. I hope they make a sequel.
Beautifuly shot, well acted, but strays too far from book. Tried too hard to fit today's attitudes into a past erra. It would have been better to have moved the entire story to today instead of overlaying today's attitudes on the past.
They shouldn't have bothered to make this version. It has too many changes and doesn't maintain interest or suspense. Kenneth Branaugh was too busy trying to incorporate modern themes into the movie instead of making a good film.
